My Email Spam Tip

Postby Gary » Thu Sep 02, 2010 11:26 am

Don't you just hate it when your inbox becomes full of spam. A well know company invented an email address for me. Yep they made one up. It managed to get through to me. Then they sold the email address to a marketing company. They sell B2B email addresses. I contacted the first company to compliant about the fact they had sold my email address. The best they could do was to give me details of the marketing company. Neither could stop the spam email or wanted to.

Today I received more offers of mobile phones to this made up email address. This pushed me over the edge. I am sure if they like selling email addresses, they want to receive the offers!

I have fixed the problem. Today I have now set up a forwarding to the company that sold my email. Now every time an email is sent to that email address it will go directly to the company that sold my email address.

Lets say I own a domain called "MyDomian" Company A lets call them Blue Directories R Us (made up name) invented an email address like a.name@mydomian (I know this was invented I never use that format) Now that email is then sold a.name@mydomain by to the marketing company. This is now what happens. When a client of the marketing company send me an email to the email a.name@mydomian it is instantly forwarded to Blue Directories R us. I never receive that email. I am sure Blue Directories R Us will be happy to receive some great offers.

Most emails don't do that but if they do contact the company see if they know how to putt it in spam. You can also just delete it. Yahoo Mail is good and google mail.

Email is always going to be a problem. For us as marketers we rely on it to keep in touch with customers and prospects. We also can't block too many emails. Any incoming email could be from a prospect or customer. While spam filter are getting better, they can never be actuate. The filter work in two ways. Firstly crowd sourcing. If a domain has been marked as spam by users this can trigger email to be moved to a spam folder. That sounds great. Spammers never use their own email address. They use real email addresses to send emails from.

From the list of emails they are going to send their message to, they pick one as the sending email. Unfortunately email is not secure, this means out going email can be marked as sent from any email address. You may have from time to time received a batch of emails saying unable to deliver or similar. This is most likely when a spammer has used your address for sending spam. Note they don't need to hack your email account to do this. They don't even need your password. All they need to do is when sending the spam is to put your email address in the from box. If this happens to you, there is a chance that your email address can become blocked by many email companies. Now whenever you send email it will be marked as spam. Your best friends may not receive your emails.

They second method is watching for key words. Yes your emails are being read albeit by a computer. There are a list of trigger words. Yes all the obvious ones. However some of the words will affect us. Words like income can trigger a spam filter. You could be writing to your team telling that this month is a great time to boost their INCOME. bingo and the spam filter blocks your email.

If you set your spam filter too high you could miss vital emails. Imagine this. One of your team has just had their best ever month with FM. They email you to tell that their income has tripled. Yep you guessed it, your spam folder receives the email. Yet if you set your filter to low, you may receive this email but your inbox is going to be full of spam emails. In any day I can receive many spam emails to my inbox. I have to be careful not to delete important emails.
